Understanding the Six Skill Signals

What each signal can tell a placement team and what to do next.

Pronunciation

What it indicates: clarity and intelligibility. Useful response: encourage repeated spoken practice focused on being understood rather than imitating an accent.

Grammar

What it indicates: the ability to construct clear spoken sentences in real time. Useful response: combine speaking practice with attention to recurring sentence patterns.

Fluency

What it indicates: whether ideas can move naturally without excessive hesitation. Useful response: increase conversational rehearsal rather than only studying more model answers.

Confidence

What it indicates: how comfortably a student expresses what they know. Useful response: create frequent low-pressure opportunities to answer aloud and build familiarity.

Filler Words

What it indicates: whether unnecessary verbal fillers are interrupting delivery. Useful response: build awareness and practise short pauses instead of filling every silence.

Vocabulary

What it indicates: whether the student has sufficient range to express ideas accurately. Useful response: prioritise precise, natural language over complicated words.
